On Rubix, Sommerhus celebrates the familiar duo chemistry that so characterizes their previous albums. The intimate songs with razor-sharp harmonies from earlier albums remained, but this time, singer/guitarist Vera Jessen-Juhrend and singer/double bassist Peter Jessen took to the world with new compositions.
Thanks to Willemen's creative input and the addition of strings, flute, drums, and electronic effects, each track acquired its own character – from the tightly rhythmic title track to the sustained pop sound of Unsee and the dreamy, almost psychedelic atmosphere of Raven.
Rubix was recorded in early 2021 at Studio SanteBoutique in the Soundport complex in Rotterdam and is – following a collection of singles – the successor to the well-received album Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Love? (2016). Additionally, Sommerhus has collaborated with poet Joz Knoop, among others, and they were part of a contemporary adaptation of the famous opera L’Orfeo (1607) by Claudio Monteverdi. Their music has already resonated live in clubs, theaters, and living rooms from the Netherlands to Denmark and South-West Africa.
The motto of the six songs by Rubix and the Adventures of Sommerhus is sung in the title track: ‘More than six colours to this Rubix cube, and counting’. Sommerhus always stays true to themselves, but otherwise their dynamic music knows no boundaries.
This year we are once again writing the music for a production by Jeugdtheater Hofplein: Het kleine heelal, based on the book by Annejan Mieras.
We previously composed the music for Luna, an enchanting performance that premiered in 2024. In Luna You follow a girl who feels different from the people around her and, one night, embarks on a mysterious journey through a world where nothing is what it seems.
